WHAT IS CONTACT IMPROVISATION?
What is Contact Improvisation?
In performance we watch and understand Contact
Improvisation as a meeting place. We can be engaged and fascinated by dialoguing
yet silent bodies the same way we follow an actual conversation. CI has the
power to move us by watching others being moved; in contact improvisation a
physical change takes place that echoes a person changing, based on the
negotiation of weight and mass in relation to gravity between two or more
bodies.
It is called Contact Improvisation because like conversations, contact is unfolding
naturally; it is not set. With letting things happen we can understand and
constantly expand the capacity of what is possible, the play that exists
between those that take part. We can take the freedom to explore and observe
all that another body – or object – has to offer and while for some this
manifests a performance others use it to broaden their vocabulary for
performance making.
